🦋 The Party

You wake up at a party.

You're not sure how, exactly, you got here. You may have just been walking in the woods or at a meeting for work or doing any other normal activity for you. But you know you weren't supposed to be at this party, you're fairly certain.

Anyone you ask about it will say the party is for you. You and the others also waking up and looking confused. Further questions will lead to the partygoers insisting you have something to eat. You're starving and others are eating the food without repercussion, so you figure there's no harm in a bite. You finish your portion.

It's a garden party at the crack of dawn, with the sun still in its early stages of climbing through the yonder, casting a good mix of pastel hues of blue, pink, and beige on everything. Heralding the first day of spring, the Ruler of the Spring Court has found it fitting to arrange this gathering where guests can feel the blades of grass touching their ankles, as well as the rich soil beneath their feet. Flowers of all kinds surround the party as if they were carefully curated. With spring as the "dawn of seasons," which marks a transition from winter's latency to the resurgence of life everywhere, the Ruler of the Dawn Court has also seen it fit to host aspects of this party during the one time of the year that dawn occurs the whole day. Tall candles and torches grace the outskirts of the garden party, providing warmth and an orange glow everywhere. Not one flame goes out even with the occasional wind, the Duchess always makes sure of this.

There are also freshly picked blossoms and branches with leaves on every table accenting the festive spread of food and drinks. This time, a lot of the food prepared for the Adopted guests are familiar to them with a little bit of a twist. Burgers might come in small packages and in toothpicks, while hotdogs in buns are also diminutive. Cookies look delectable but they have a flowery flavor to them, as if eating freshly picked daisies or daffodils. Fruits that may have been present in an Adopted's home, such as pineapples and watermelons, have seeds in odd places. Picking this selection of food is an attempt to be more welcoming and to appease the lovely guests the fae have invited.

As the party winds down and everyone's eaten, a tall, stately woman stands up and speaks. You feel her voice more than hear it.

I am the Lawspeaker of the Fae, elected by Seelie and Unseelie alike, and you are all, now, subjects of Faerie. You cannot leave this realm once you have eaten our food, and even if you could, there is no saying how much time has passed back where you're from. Your loved ones are likely dead, your problems have likely played out. We require assistance in various matters, and each of you has been chosen for your talent and skill. You will be adopted by one of the Seelie or Unseelie Courts based on your strengths and personality. Your Court will decide what to do with you from there.

As suddenly as she stood, she sits back down.

🦋 Chance at a Dance

A party is not complete without dancing, of course, and while during the last gathering held for the Adopted, different fae danced to music exclusively for them around a glowing tree, this time they are insisting their guests to join in.

This is a party for you, after all.

If the prodding of the different fae hosts won't convince you, perhaps the music will. They play easily recognizable tunes that their wonderful guests must have heard before. These melodies have certain unique effects to their mortal attendees, which are as follows:

  • Upbeat Music: You will believe that you and your dance partner have been friends forever and have known each other a long time.
  • Romantic Music: You will become amorous and flirtatious towards your dance partner.
  • Slow Music: You will develop some tension with your dance partner. It may be negative or sexual; completely up to you.
  • Quiet Music: You will assume your dance partner is a threat and try to fight them.

🦋 Flower Power

At the Spring King's behest, every Adopted should wear a flower corsage or boutonnière to the gathering. After all, this is to celebrate the coming of spring and what better way to do that than to honor everything in bloom.

The thing is, though, the King of Spring, while amorous and friendly, also has a penchant for playing with mortals' memories, if not also affect their desires and despairs.

So, mischievous as he is, he made sure to enchant the different flowers present in every corsage and boutonnière for the party with the effects below:

  • Rose: You will recall a horrific trauma
  • Carnation: You will see a vision of your future, whether it's good or bad
  • Orchid: You will remember a time you lost someone
  • Chrysanthemum: You will believe someone among the Adopted is your soulmate
  • Dahlia: You will believe you betrayed someone important to you, whether you actually did or not

It is perhaps a good thing that no one but the Adopted are allowed to see these visions and memories, but everyone who wears a corsage or boutonnière will be able to see each other's memories and visions when in close enough physical proximity to the vision-haver, for better or for worse.

🦋 GEIS

You feel a vibration in your pocket sometime after the Lawspeaker addresses everyone. When you search for the source, you will pull out your Leaf, the device the Fae use to stay in touch with each other. Anyone who's used a smart phone will easily recognize how it works.

Greetings, Adopted. This is your Lawspeaker.

Tell us all of a time you gave someone a gift. Perhaps a bouquet of flowers or a box of chocolates. Was it appreciated or not? A reward might await the most meaningful gift given.

"You didn't have friends you disagreed with?" she retorted after noting the way he'd quickly changed from 'we' to 'X-nerds'. She was willing to bet he'd had friends in the school. "None of us - not me, not Charles, and not Erik - agree entirely on what is the best way forward. And we've all leaned closer to one of the others over the course of the last few decades. But I'm not 'against' Charles any more than I'm 'against' Erik."

Her lips twitched a little. "I'll bet you've never thought of the morality of the telepath taking over people's minds. It might not be a technical crime, but it can be even worse than anything I've ever done."

She'd roughed people up, but she'd never killed anyone. Barring the one time she'd come close. Charles's power was incredibly invasive. Enough so that she'd had to create a boundary when she was young so that he wouldn't just look into her mind. And then she had to trust that he'd keep his word.

"What makes you think I liked Xavier? That's why I fucking left him." John spits out like venom, his brows furrowing into a glare. He doesn't really think all the mind reading the telepath has been doing is ethical in any way either, not that he knows if Xavier has been doing that a lot or not. But judging from Raven's anecdote, he might as well be.

"Joined Magneto because he, at least, promised something will be done to all the humans who like killing us and experimenting on us." And while the Magneto he came to know here is trying to forge a better path for all of them, he still doesn't agree on the whole coexistence thing. But Erik has managed to reach out to him here, and for that, he has John's loyalty.

Rolling his eyes, John's anger dissipates a smidge. "Anyway, we're not so different. You left him to join Erik. I did, too. You're still with him back in my time."

"I didn't say that Charles was your friend," she pointed out. "He was your teacher. I don't remember making great friends with my teachers." She was different. She was less a teacher and more of a leader. And still she didn't think she was going to be very close with the younger generation. There was too much of an age gap between the two groups. Maybe in another ten or twenty years.

She frowned when he said that she was still with him.

"You mean back with him. He left. He tried to save a mutant and then got arrested. He was in a secure facility underneath the Pentagon for nearly a decade before Charles broke him out. We haven't been together since."

They'd worked together, but only when the first mutant appeared. And then he'd left again.

John wants to retort that she did say friends he disagreed with that's why he came to that conclusion, but it's far more interesting to imagine this version of Erik imprisoned under the Pentagon. Talk about badass. He's not surprised he ended up there, to be fair. He's just impressed at how hard Magneto goes, no matter when he's from.

That even during his own time, the man also broke out of jail. Prison break's probably just another Tuesday for him.

"Well, I guess you guys are just endgame like that, huh? Always ending up back in each other's arms like some sappy romance novel."

But there's a part of her story that actually piques John's interest more. "Why would Xavier break him out? Never thought Baldy would do something illegal like that."

Her laugh was both immediate and incredulous. "Back in his arms? I was barely there to begin with." Not that she hadn't imagined during those first few years what might have been if he hadn't been arrested. But out of any of her boys, the one she felt she might end up back with was Hank. And there'd be a long road to go before they could get there.

"From what I heard, they received some kind of message in the future. Where you're from, maybe. Later. They use my blood to create something that will apparently destroy the world. And they figured that I'd be more receptive to both Charles and Erik."

Her face twisted in a sour expression. "I suppose older-Erik didn't expect that his younger self would try to kill me." There was a brief pause. "Or maybe he did. He just didn't imagine that trying to kill me would leave blood on the scene that they could use."

It had worked out in the end, but she'd still left on her own.

John listens to her words, but he’s honestly just half listening. So much of this he particularly doesn’t care about. Time travel, interpersonal relationships between old people, he doesn’t give a damn. To be fair, it’s juicy gossip, and something he’d probably tease Erik with, but that’s mostly it.

“You old people are so dramatic.” Says the guy who’s his own Drama Queen. “Just have some good old threesome and be done with it.” He says dismissively. These people are bringing the whole of mutantkind into their problems and it’s admittedly dumb.

“Anyway, they’re probably here somewhere. You’ll run into them. Maybe if you’re lucky they’re all brainwashed to flirt or something. The fae likes doing that around here.”

A bemused expression flashed across her face. "Try suggesting that to Charles, please. But make sure I'm there when you do. I'm his sister." Not by blood. And not by Raven's reckoning. But by his? She was and always would be his sister.

Her expression grew serious as she thought more carefully about what he'd said.

"So in your time, Erik has started taking in young mutants again." She studied him. "How old are you." She and Angel had been in their twenties when he'd encouraged them to join him. She, at least, had been slightly sheltered with her days of stealing from houses long past. Angel had been much more world-weary.

And now Raven was the world-weary one and Angel was dead.

A disgusted expression crosses John’s features when Raven mentions she’s Charles’ sister. As if things can’t get any more complicated. To be fair, he doesn’t fully believe her. The Mystique from his time is a manipulative woman so he’s going to take everything she says with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, it’s a terrifying thought to be related to Xavier.

So he just focuses on her inquiry. “Nineteen. I don’t think Magneto ever stopped recruiting mutants, to be honest.” Both here and back home. The guy always has an agenda, though here it’s more about caring and protecting them, which John has witnessed and experienced firsthand, and for that, this Erik earned his loyalty.

“And before you say This Or That happened in your time, lady, I don’t really much care. I think we know two completely different versions of the same man. Happens here. I’ve seen two versions of one person.” When he silently stalked that Avengers mingle and found two Tony Starks. Yeah, that was kind of wild.

"We must," Raven said, considering the implications. "Maybe your Erik never got arrested for assassinating the President." That was when things had changed. When Raven had been left on her own. When mutants had started to be taken and treated like lab experiments. Because she knew for a fact that her Erik had very much stopped trying to recruit mutants for a time. She couldn't imagine him trying to deliberately put his child in harm's way like that.

But it would also explain why he seemed to think she'd always been with Erik. It was easier to see someone's perspective when you were always with them. That's why it had been so hard to break from Charles.

She took a deep breath to try to rid herself of all the mixed emotions he was evoking in her and stared him down.

"It's 'Raven', not 'lady'. 'Mystique' if you must. Now, tell me about these 'two versions' you ran into and explain why it couldn't be some kind of shapeshifting power like I have."

John's just a newly recruited member of the Brotherhood back home. Didn't really get a chance to have some tea and small chit-chat with the Magneto who saw his potential. In a funny twist of fate, it's this version present in fae realm who he got to know more, who showed him that he's worth being loyal to.

When she stares him down and asks him about these versions he encountered, John gives her a glare. He doesn't like being ordered around, not by anyone other than Erik. So, with his glare making way to a small smirk, he turns around.

"That's something you'd just have to find out, lady." And he leaves.
